PREFACE

The purpose of this faux website, [ I use a new term  'blogsite'],  is to present additional photographs of sites taken during my visits to Estonia in 2006 and 2008, which do not appear in the book but relate to it.

Also to present information unavailable from other websites, either because it is held by persons who lack webpage building skills or their own policy to keep the information private.

Some of the webpages that have information are in Estonian and some have information that is false, corrupted or deliberately tainted. When I was in Estonia, I was advised to treat any articles published in the Soviet era as being tainted unless i could confirm their sources and presentation myself.

For example there is a piece on my relative, Willem Rattur by a reviewer in that era. He was described to me as being ehtne punane, as a genuine or authentic communist, and he used to republish articles and books by other authors with a communist slant.

History is full of unpalatable truths. In fact I bought a copy of a book Nimed: Marmor Tahvlid, which translates literally as Names on Marble Tablets [but actually means the names on an honour roll at a war memorial], a famous book published pre-war. However I was advised that the government had edited the book in the late 1930s because of political events, the VAPS uprising, because some of the characters mentioned originally in the book had been involved in the attempted seizure of power.

Sites described in the webpages include, my father, Wello Rattur's, primary school, secondary school (commercial college), maritime academy as they were at the time he attended them and as they exist in the present day,  2012.

Other pages  depict
- his early home in Tallinn,
- his artefacts (passport),
- his childhood home Kokskar Light (house) on Keri Island,
- subsequent home Viirelaid Light(house) on Viirelaid island,
-  later home in Leisi on Saaremaa Island, and hitherto unseen photographs of his sailing ships ....

As well as articles or translations of articles, and description and commentary on historical events which relate to the book.

Included on the pages links to other websites can be found which for example, contain copyright material held by other persons, images of Keri island and its environs.
